![]() Royal Gorge Northern California has some of the best winter sports locations in the world only an hour or two away. B.A.S. cross-country skiing on regular basis during the winter months. Check the calendar for an upcoming expedition. Let’s go find some great snow and play!
IT’S TIME TO KICK OFF THE 2010 CROSS COUNTRY SKI SEASON WITH BAS!
What we do: This division offers what is called “Nordic” skiing, which is on groomed tracks and is not backcountry skiing on non-groomed trails. There are two Nordic techniques: the “classic” Nordic stride and the “skate”. Both techniques are vigorous and much faster than backcountry skiing. To get an idea please click the Royal Gorge or Tahoe Donner links below and browse the sites.
Our upcoming trips (subject to revision based on interest and feedback): We will be offering one or two trips per month during the X-C ski season. Our outings will be at Royal Gorge at Soda Springs and Tahoe Donner at Truckee. See www.royalgorge.com and http://www.tahoedonner.com . Depending on the level of interest we will organize more BAS trips as well as informal trips. Here are the proposed dates for your planning purposes: 1/23/10 2/6/10 2/27/10 3/13/10
All the trips will depart from the LaBou parking lot, Sierra College and Douglas. Our custom is to carpool and share transportation costs. You will receive an email flyer with all the specifics at least a week prior to each trip.
About our retail sponsor: We are also fortunate to have the premier Cross Country Ski shop in the entire area as one of our BAS sponsors … Sierra Nordic Cross Country Ski Shop at Truckee. Check out their great website at www.sierranordic.com. Also be sure to sign up for their email notifications which provide a wealth of information.
About BAS Membership: Remember, in order to participate in BAS activities and get the discounts from our sponsors you need to be BAS member. If you are not already a member go to www.baysideadventuresports.com (click on the membership tab) for information on joining and the many benefits.

Or, you can call Steve at 916-214-1534. Severe weather cancels: Safety comes first. If we determine that the driving conditions are dangerous we’ll make the call to cancel. If any doubts call Steve at 916-214-1534. Nordic Skiing: There are two types of Cross Country Skiing: Back Country and Nordic. We do the Nordic, which is on groomed trails and is a faster activity than Back Country. If you have your own set of back country ski’s, characterized by being wide and metal edges, you may want to consider renting Nordic equipment. Agenda for the day: - 7:15am: Meet at the Starbucks located at the Raley Shopping Center off Horseshoe Bar Road in Loomis. Take the Loomis Exit. It is the exit after Sierra College as you are heading east from Roseville. We will form carpools. Get there at 7 if you plan on getting a muffin, coffee, etc. Those of you with 4 wheel drive vehicles please have a full tank as you will be a likely candidate to be a driver, especially if it is snowing up the hill. Passengers are expected to pay for the gas expenses of the driver and each car pool can work this out. - 7:30: Leave Starbucks. (you’ll be provided with directions and cell numbers of the leaders). Note: we will leave promptly at 7:30. If you are running late call Steve’s cell number: 916-214-1534. - 9:00 (approximately): Arrive at Tahoe Donner X-C ski area. The leaders will direct you to the lodge, ticket purchase, and rentals for those who do not have their own equipment. 10:30: Lessons start for those who have signed up. We strongly recommend taking a lesson if you have not skied Nordic before, even if you are an experienced downhill skier. The techniques are totally different. Those experienced skiers who are not taking lessons will have a morning ski, either classic or skate options. 12:00: Lessons are over. Everyone will meet at the Lodge for lunch. After lunch we will all head out for an afternoon ski. We will break into groups depending on skill and speed levels 4:00 – 4:30: Return to Lodge, return rentals, and head for home. Cost: For those who are skiing for the first time, or have not skied for a long time, we highly recommend you get the ski package, which includes rentals (skis, boots, and poles), trail pass, and a 1 ½ hour lesson. The total cost for all this is $47. For those of you who have your own equipment the cost for the all day trail pass is $23. For rentals, trail pass, and no lesson, the cost is $43. We recommend the Package, which includes the lesson, for an additional $5. Even if you are not a beginner you can sign up for an intermediate or advanced lesson. If you plan on bringing children please refer to the website http://tdxc.com/home for rates. About Tahoe Donner: This the second largest X-C ski area in the Tahoe Basin with over 100 km of groomed trails. Check out the website, particularly the interactive trail map. http://tdxc.com/home What to bring / wear: Liability release: We have blank BAS liability releases at the meeting location for you to sign before leaving. Our retail sponsor: If you like this sport and the great conditioning you get from it and plan on going multiple times you may consider getting your own equipment. Sierra Nordic Cross Country Ski Shop is located in Truckee at 22022 Donner Pass Road, Truckee. It is located just to the East of the Safeway Center. You can check out their website at www.sierranordic.com. They just started a Spring sale so check it out. Also be sure to sign up for their email notifications which provide a wealth of information on local skiing, products, waxing, etc. If you have any questions or need additional info just hit “reply”.
