Julie Schmitz moved from Orange (Southern Cal) 22 years ago. Julie has been attending Bayside Church since it moved into Granite Bay High School. And she has been participating in BAS events for at least 10 years now.

After School, Julie did more training for ranches and individuals. Then she moved to Northern California, got a job at Handley Ranch in Lincoln, and jumped into the family businesses: Dental Office Construction, Boarding & Leasing Horses, and Horse Transportation.

Julie has been riding and training horses most of her life. She started by working and training at Arabian Ranches, and showed in English, Dressage, Western, Team Penning, & Sorting. Julie also showed and transported Andalusian Horses in Las Vegas, Burbank and Santa Barbara.

“I took over the (equestrian) group after the predecessor got married and moved to Arizona.”

And now, Julie spends most of her time on the trail, camping, doing High School Rodeo and 4H with the kids. She also likes to take out the dirt bike, and to play some paint ball with her kids.

“God saved my life through my horses and allows me to work through them ‘for Him’. Bayside Adventure Sports makes a difference for me, my family, and my community by keeping my faith – and my family’s faith – strong, and by bringing more people to Him through faith and love of sport.”

BAS members hit the hills and trails of Northern California each month. Ride locations vary and range from the Auburn Ravine, Granite Bay, and the Sierra to occasional forays further a-field. Rides usually feature a range of options for beginner and experienced cyclists alike. Check the ride description to assess the suitability to your skill level. Let’s go get dirty!

Intermediate and Advanced Ride

Fleming Meadows –August 28, 2010

Our scheduled ride this month was Sawtooth Ridge but one of the best trails we would normally ride has been closed so the ride is being moved to Fleming Meadow.

BRIEF RIDE SYNOPSIS:

Fleming Meadow is a great Sierra Foothills ride with ride options available for Intermediate and Advanced riders. The Fleming Meadow and Jenkinson Lake trails have been favorite trails with local riders for years. Our route will first include the Fleming Meadows Loop with an option to ride the Jenkinson Lake loop as well. Fleming Meadows is mostly single track with a few fire roads and several gradual, but long climbs followed by fun, fast descents on hard packed single track. There are a few technical rock areas easily traversed by most riders.

Genesis 2:8-9 “Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden and there He put the man he had formed. And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground – trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”

PRE-RIDE INFORMATION

1. Meeting Place and Time:

Meet at 7:00 at The Hub Express, 8741 Auburn Folsom Blvd, 95746. This is in the Ace Hardware shopping center on the south-east corner of Douglas Blvd and Auburn Folsom Blvd. The Hub Express is located towards the south side of the shopping area, near the Subway Sandwich Shop and the Granite Bay Post Office. For anyone who needs a sugar or caffeine fix there is a Donut Shop next to The Hub. From there we’ll all carpool to the trailhead. Driving directions to the parking area will be given to all drivers at that time.

I know it’s supposed to rain today but the heavy canopy of trees will keep us dry.

I rode that section of trial last time; it’s easy, go for it!

Yup my new bike weighs less than 25 lbs

We’ll be home in plenty of time for an early dinner.

This is an easy stream crossing, you won’t even get wet.

There are a few rocks on this trail, but it’s not bad.

This is the easiest 30 miles you’ll ever do on a mountain bike.

I know it looks like a lot of snow but its’ not very thick, you can blast right through it.

There are only a few short hike-a-bike sections.

I did that whole climb in the big ring – how about you?

Pt. Reyes – Stewart Ranch Camp Out – Sept 3-6, 2010

Please join us September 3-6 at Point Reyes for our annual BAS Equestrian campout at Stewart Ranch! Advanced reservations are necessary. Please call (415) 663-1362 to reserve your spot at the Stewart Ranch camp ground before you arrive. There is also a bed and breakfast in Point Reyes called Point Reyes Country Inn that will board your horse (415) 663-9696. (See details below)

We will be arriving at the camp ground around 1pm on Friday afternoon, but you can arrive whenever you like and stay for as long as you can. There are no dogs allowed, but RV’s and campers are welcome. Don’t forget your high lines or portable corrals as there are no corrals available in the camp ground area. There are hot showers and running water though! The trails range from easy to difficult, so riders of all levels are welcome. If you plan on doing the ride to Wildcat Beach from Stewart Ranch, make sure your horse is in excellent shape as it’s about a 6 hour ride round trip and very steep both ways. Make sure to pack a lunch for that one. Horse shoes should not be necessary as the trails are relatively sandy, with only minor gravel at some points, but use your best judgment if your horse has sensitive feet. On Saturday evening, we will all gather at the Stewart Ranch camp ground around 6:30 for our annual Surf ‘n Turf potluck. Please bring a dish to share with approximately 15 people and an extra log or two for the fire. Temperatures are a lot cooler over there and the air is misty, so bring blankets for your horses and a sweatshirt or two for yourself. Non-riders are also welcome to just come and fellowship and do some hiking. Any questions, get a hold of Julie Schmitz silvershadowranch@yahoo.com or Erin Maurer aariele@gmail.com before Friday! No reception at the camp ground. See you there!

Please RSVP by Friday, Sept 3 at 9am - http://campstewartsept2010.eventbrite.com/

Division Purpose

The purpose of the Equestrian Division is to provide Christian fellowship and outreach to men, women, children, families, and singles, who have an interest in horses. Just as with the motorcycle group, not everyone has a horse. The Equestrian Division is composed of owners and people who have horses, and those who have a BIG INTEREST in horses. And just as with the motorcycle group, the Equestrian Division will not be providing horses for non owners.

Description

The BAS Trail Riders are a group of horse owners and riders who provide their own horse, tack, safety equipment, transportation, feed, insurance, etc. They meet and select trails and events in which to participate, which may include clinics and classes.

Baysiders who do not have a horse may attend the clinics and classes. They may also wish to develop group activities involving grooming, horse anatomy, shoeing demonstrations, horse art, cowboy poetry, etc. The Trail riding Division and the Equine Interest Division will work closely in order to make the physical part of this group happen. This does not include providing riding lessons or providing a horse to ride. It means providing a horse, when possible, for an instruction in anatomy, grooming, a shoeing or vet demonstration, etc.

We ride nearly every month at epic areas like Foresthill, Georgetown, Stonyford and more. The highlights of each year are our weekend-long trips to Moon Rocks and Yerington, both in Nevada.

Our monthly rides are generally suited for all ability levels above beginner. If you want to get to a level above beginner we have a dirt bike school that will get you comfortable with trail obstacles and trail riding which occurs monthly. All dirt bike events require you to be a paid member in good standing of Bayside Adventure Sports (BAS) with a membership card to present at the event and to sign a liability release for before EVERY event. If you are not a member we will have membership forms available at the rides or you can sign up on this web page. A 1 year family membership is $50 but we also have a trial 90 day membership available for $20.

Intermediate/Advanced Ride – Squaw Ridge, August 21, 2010

Our next group ride is being hosted and led by Martin Myers. This will be an outstanding ride in an area we have not tackled before. Martin knows this area and has several trail options available depending on the skill level of the riders joining him but this is NOT a ride for beginners (intermediate and above are OK).

The ride details:

Squaw Ridge, behind Bear River Reservoir and Silver Lake on highway 88 has some of the Eldorado National forest’s finest high country riding. It’s a mix of 4wd tracks with single-track options. The mileage and terrain will depend on the riders that attend. We will reach elevation 9,800 at one point on Squaw Ridge, and as you can imagine, the views are incredible… photo ops abound.

Your bike should be in excellent mechanical condition as we can be deep into the back country at times. It is very important that you bring the tools needed to work on your bike if something happens to it. There is an opportunity to stop for replenishment at the Plasse’s Resort store, but you should be prepared with food and water (Hydration Pack is mandatory!) for the day in case the situation prevents a trip to the store. I will carry a water filter. If you have a water filter, please bring it.

The ride is limited to six participants so reserve a spot quickly as this ride will fill up.

We will meet at a convenient spot in Placerville no later than 8:00 am on Saturday morning August 21st to caravan to the staging area. Once you sign up all details will be provide to you. As with all of our rides you must be a PAID member of Bayside Adventure Sports to participate. If you are not a paid member or your membership has lapsed please contact me to get signed up. There is no cost for our normally monthly rides other than the annual membership dies ($50.00/year). You must also complete a liability release on the day of the event. This will be emailed to you once you sign up.

To sign up for the August ride contact martin Myers at:

The September ride is near South lake Tahoe on September 18th. This will be a relatively easy ride but quite scenic. This ride will be limited to 10 riders. This ride will be led by Paul Schiess.

BAYSIDE DIRT BIKE SCHOOL

Next class TBA in Lincoln (see below for details)

Bayside Dirt Bike School is officially open!! We have had 7 young people go through he school now. We have three cycles and all of the safety gear so if you know of someone who wants to learn to ride a dirt bike let us know. This is a beginner school so not for advanced riding instruction (yet). We teach at a private track so the location is safe and non threating. There is no cost to the school but we do ask for a free will donation to help defray our costs (insurance, gas, oil, parts, maintenance, etc.) We are also in need of a couple of good motorcycle tie downs straps if you have any extra. We will be holding the classes once a month in 2010. We can accommodate anyone ages 8 to adult.

Dirt Bike Gear Rental - Our dirt bike school has accumulated lots of KIDS dirt bike gear. It occurred to me that kids always out grow the gear long before they wear it out. With that in mind I would like to offer the opportunity to rent our safety gear (boots, pants, jersey, gloves, chest protector) if you have a young one that is growing. I have heard stories of kids using a piece of gear once and then being to big for it. If this appeals to you let me know. We will rent the full out fit of gear (sorry no helmets will be rented) for $25.00 for an unlimited amount of time. We will require a deposit of $100.00 of which $75.00 will be refunded upon return of the gear in good condition. Hopefully this will save you money and allow your kids to get to a stage where you can buy them long term use gear (Our sponsor cycle shops give discounts that make it very affordable!!

Beginner to Intermediate Riders – BAS Private Track – Lincoln, CA, TBA

Our next ride is this Saturday April 24th at the private training track in Lincoln. This is a great track for kids and smaller bikes. It will wear you out if you have a 450 (I have warned you). We also have a special small track just for kids and little bikes that do not want to ride the big track. The weather should be perfect and the track will start off being a bit muddy in the corners but will dry out to be perfect.

There is a $5.00 per rider charge to use the track. This helps cover the cost of track supplies.

There are NO restrooms available. Keep this in mind when you stop at Starbucks on the way to the track.

The tracks will be open from 10:00 until 4:00.

If you plan on joining us you must let me know. Please reply to the email address below and I will send you the liability release as well maps and directions. Even if you have been here before we need to know you are coming and get you a new liability release. Do not just show up. Call if you have any questions.

As with all of our events you must be a paid member of Bayside Adventure Sports. If you are not a paid member yet we have membership link on the Bayside Adventure Sports web page http://baysideadventuresports.com/ or you can join at the ride for either a 90 day trail membership for $20 or an annual membership for $50.

The Dirt Bike School will be open but it is full at this time. We can put you on the waiting list if you desire.

FRIENDLY SUNDAY STROLLS:

What better way to get the family outdoors than to go hiking! Bayside Adventure Sports offers a series of easy, family friendly, beginner “Sunday Strolls” that are designed to introduce people to the exciting outdoor sport of hiking.

Once a month, on Sunday at 11:15am (just after the 9:45am service), we meet by the Bayside Offices (south of the Granite Bay Bayside complex). We leave at 11:30. These hikes are usually within about 30 minutes of Bayside Granite Bay and last about 2 hours at most.

Sunday Strolls are a great way to:

- Introduce young children to hiking

- Find outdoor gems around the corner from home

- Meet/fellowship with other Baysiders that love the outdoors

- See if hiking is your thing

- Start training for bigger, badder hikes with BAS

- Meet your BAS Hiking and Backpacking Staff

- Learn where to get all that cool outdoor gear you see people carrying

- Travel the way Jesus did

- Get outdoors and enjoy God’s Creation with Bayside Adventure Sports!

Waterfalls:

All of the leaders of BAS agree that one of the reasons they started hiking was to chase waterfalls. This year most if not all of our 2 and 3 boot hikes will have a waterfall as part of the hike. We will start on the coast and in the valley and move to the sierras with the snow melt.
In addition, we will offer some waterfall hikes during the annual Yosemite trip. Check our calendar below for the schedule and the hike descriptions for details.

Saturday July 17, 2010

WHO: This hike is open to everyone who would enjoy, from a hiker’s perspective, an easy going trail that meanders to 109’ Bassi Falls. Because it is so short we will probably attempt one or two other falls in the area as well, depending on our group.

WHAT: The hike is rated one boot, less than 5 miles, less than 1,000 ft elevation gain, and good stable trail. This trail is only 1-1/2 miles RT with minimal elevation gain but a wondrous sight to see as it cascades over the smooth granite.

WHEN: On Saturday, July 17th we will meet at the Hazel Ave Park and Ride at 8:00 AM. Car pooling is possible from this point. We should arrive at the trailhead around 9:30.

WHERE: From Hwy #50 about 20 miles east of Placerville, turn left (north) onto Ice House Rd (Forest Road 3). Drive 15.9 miles on Ice House Rd. to Union Valley Reservoir. Turn right onto an unmarked dirt road (Road 12N32A), just after crossing the bridge over Big Silver Creek (opposite Big Silver group camp). Drive 0.2 miles to a junction and turn left. Then drive 0.8 miles to another junction and turn right. Drive another 0.7 miles to the trailhead at the end of the road (total 1.7 miles along the dirt road).

HOW: Please register on Eventbrite: http://hikebassijuly10.eventbrite.com/ Current BAS membership is required. For benefits and to join, please see the membership page. If you are new to BAS, a 3-month trial membership is available by email PamelaH@Baysideonline.com

NOTE: registration closes on Friday at 8:00 PM. You will not be able to register after that. Please print out and bring a signed copy of the Liability Release found on the hiking website.

WHAT TO BRING: Wear appropriate hiking gear and apparel, including hat and sun block. Bring at a minimum two liters of water lunch and few snacks. Please review the hiking essentials from the website. And don’t forget your cameras!

WEATHER: The weather should be hot and clear, however it is always good to bring a light waterproof shell in case of afternoon thunderstorms so common in the Sierra this time of year.

Our summit hikes are Peak Bagging:

California boasts some wonderfull summit opportunities in the 10,000 to 14,000 foot categories. You can download the peak bagging score card in the Peaks of California section. These hikes require more advanced levels of fitness and are what you can work up to by participating in the adventure hikes.

Our expeditions are Team Events:

Each year we offer out of state / country team expeditions and in the state of California team expeditions.
In 2010 the out of state/country expedition was the Kilimanjaro Summit – (Jan 2010) BAS went to Africa to climb fabled Mt Kilimanjaro. We also performed a service project in the local area and then took a 4-day safari before heading home.
In 2010 our in-state expedition is the Tahoe Rim Trail – We will be doing the entire 165 miles of the Tahoe Rim Trail, broken down over 6 weekends in June, July and August. We will be forming the team this spring. Once the first hike begins you will not be able to join the team as the challenging nature of expeditions requires group support and cohesion to ensure a successful outcome.
Check our calendar below for the schedule and the hike descriptions for details.

WHAT: The Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) is know as “A trail like no other”. It is a world class travel destination that passes through two state lines (California and Nevada), and six counties. The trail is 165 mile winding peak to peak around Lake Tahoe. The trail rises from the lakeshore and climbs through forests and meadows to ridges 8,000 feet or higher.
Once we’ve completed all sections of the TRT, you can register to join the 165 Miler Club. The Tahoe Rim Trail Association will give you a 165 mile patch, a beautiful full color certificate of completion, put your name in the 165 Mile Club Log Book, on the website, and in the Trail Blazer. All of these will be reminders of one of your greatest achievements. See www.tahoerimtrail.org for details of becoming a TRT member.

Hike Difficulty Ratings

The trips for 2010 can be classed into three broad categories.

Sunday Strolls that will be short, generally local, family oriented hikes following the 9:45 AM Bayside Services.

1 and 2 boot hikes. These are hikes that will likely challenge someone on a regular walking schedule.

Challenge Hikes. These are the 3 and 4 boot hikes, many of which will be prerequisites for attending our high adventure summits (ie. Mt. Shasta – 5 boot hikes)

One of the goals of the Hiking Division is to encourage a healthy lifestyle through walking. If you are regularly walking 20 to 30 minutes per day you will be well on your way to participating in our 1 and 2 boot hikes.

It is very important to realize that challenge hikes are for the physically fit. In addition to fitness, being familiar with your body at elevation is imperative for a successful outing. Please have recent successful experiences at 6,000 foot peaks before you attempt 8,000 foot peaks (3 boots). Please successfully experience 8,000 foot peaks before attempting 10,000 foot peaks (4 boots). And do not attempt peaks above 12,000 feet (5 boots) without experience on 10,000 foot peaks. There are physiological realities associated with high adventure.

If you still have questions about which hikes are for you please feel free to take our light hearted self assessment by clicking here Hiking Self Assessment or pasting this URL into your browser (http://baysideadventuresports.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Hiking-Self-Assessment.doc).

Only you and your physician can determine if you have the required physical fitness for these activities.

Peaks of California

By clicking on this link you can download a Microsoft Excel file that lists all of the California Peaks above 3000 feet, sorted into tabs by height. You can use this to track your personal accomplishments and BAS led accomplishments.

Remember that our rating system is grouped in part by elevation. Mastery of a lower elevation both in fitness and in altitude will enable you to better prepare for the higher and farther hikes.

It continues to sell out year after year leaving many riders not able to participate. This is your chance to ride around Lake Tahoe at Summer’s end offering fresh mountain air, incredible scenic beauty, great food & entertainment and managed and supported by one of the most experienced bicycle event management teams in the West.

Start – Finish

REMINDER: Our kayak season is from March to November each year – so mark your calendars to look for scheduled trips on the web site beginning in March 2010!

Come let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation!! Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. Psalm

BAS Ministry is intended to connect fellow outdoor enthusiasts with Gods great creation and share His word. You will notice that we have updated our website and will be promoting a system that allows participants to register for monthly trips. This helps George and I to know how many people plan to paddle so that we can make each trip pleasurable and safe. Each month we will update the kayaking website with details on the upcoming trips. Hopefully this will keep everyone informed without sending mass emails that flood your in-boxes! We are so looking forward to another fabulous year of paddling with friends of the past and new paddlers who want to experience kayaking at another level, God Powered! Hang on to your hats and hope to see you on the water

Hello Fellow Kayakers’We had a wonderful paddle at Clementine last month. The weather was warm and the water was flowing. We shared some God inspired focus on Faith and shared stories of perseverance and walking in His footsteps!

Our next trip has been changed! Instead of Lake Hennessey (water level too low) we are heading up Rattlesnake Bar towards Auburn. This is a wonderful paddle, and with the snow we have from the Sierras, and the still overflowing Folsom Lake, there will be no shortage of water here! Nanhee, Steve and I paddled upstream a couple of months ago and spotted a family of otters who looked like they had made home in the upper portion of Folsom Lake. Imagine it will be a bit toasty this weekend so lets have an early start. Plan to be on the water by 10am and beat the crowds!

Being that this is a State Park, their will be an entrance fee of $10. Bring your Park Pass, or some cash to get past the kiosk.

Remember, current BAS membership is required. See the membership page for benefits and to join. If you are new to BAS, a free three month trial membership is available – contact PamelaH@Baysideonline.com

Warming up properly is crucial.
Initially, it can be done by any method that enables the heart to beat faster.

One can simply walk and jog, or if cardiovascular equipment is available, utilize machines such as a rowing machine or a bicycle.

Start at a gentle pace, and then slowly increase the pace until your heartbeat rate increases and your body temperature rises.

It is important to note that the pace should be in accordance to one’s current fitness level—the activity should leave a person energized and not exhausted. After you warm up then stretch your warm muscles.

Hunting trip to Canada!

ATTENTION Wingshooters, Waterfowlers and anyone who dreams of Canadian Geese and Mallards locked up, feet down, coming into the decoys…

The Hunting Division of Bayside Adventure Sports is coordinating a trip to experience the most exciting waterfowl hunting in the world!

Alberta Canada is a meca for hundreds of thousands of staging birds during September and October before they begin their long migration south. Although the hunt is not until October, the time is now to reserve your spot as they are limited and come down to meet the Host, Kingwest Outfitters while they are at the International Sportsmen’s Exposition this week. The ISE show is at CalExpo from Thursday through Sunday of this week.

We thought since we did not have a duck club this season and we are unsure about next, this would be a great time to have a group hunt that would make memories for the rest of out lives! We have also arranged an exclusive discount for Bayside Adventure Sports members who would like to participate in this hunt! (Current membership is required – to join or renew, see the membership page at www.BaysideAdventureSports.com)

I was raised in very strict Christian family, which defined one’s faith by how many church events or sermons one attends. Most of my life, I struggled to find the balance time between God and Nature. As my personal relationship with God has grown with my age, I find myself much more in tune with my Savior when I’m surrounded by his creations. Nature has given so much insight on How GOD works in my life and in my heart. On weekends when I can just get away to mountains or deep in the bottom of ocean, that’s when I feel like I’m inside of God’s belly, having straight one-on-one intimacy with his Grace and feel the splendor of His Love for me.

Now, BAS has channeled my faith and spirit to share this experience with others in a fantastic way, to bring together everyone close to God, as one, in nature.

I want to grow and learn with fellow nature lovers, HOW POWERFUL and MIGHTY our GOD is, in our walk with him to the path to heaven by Hike, Kayak, Snowshoe, Swim, Camp, Scuba Dive, Sail…. or just meet and sharing our crosses with each other.

In my many travel experience, I’ve always find that no matter how different our cultures, races, religions are… we can all come together on common ground in love of nature…..that’s great place to start our journey to it’s source, Our ONE GOD the Creator.

Thank you for offering me the opportunity to join this great leadership vision of reaching people with sports. I’m not much of an experienced leader, but I am honored to be part of BAS.
